Road Pricing

Maybe I've got this democracy business muddled up, but didn't we just have a general election. Now, the Government is planning a radical new policy, getting rid of fuel duty, and introducing road pricing instead.

There are arguments to be made for this (weak, but arguments all the same). But couldn't they have at least mentioned it last month, and allowed people to vote on it at the polls.

Or maybe that isn't how New Labour thinks things should work.

The manifesto was writen by Gordon Brown. The Government is run by Tony Blair.

But this policy is worth of New Labour in every way. It's complicated, like all New Labour taxes, and it depends on intrusive technology that probably won't work, just like ID cards.

And if you must tax the people, what's wrong with taxing petrol? Surely it's the ultimate pollution tax? Road pricing will discourage new fuel efficent cars. It doesn't make any sense, which is authentic New Labour.
